Kabuki Makeup project interpreting “beauty” from Color Theory class. Yes, you kimono elitists can call me out on the shoddy kimono attempt and the fact I’m not a man, hehe

Blackface is a really touchy subject for many African Americans. Popularized in the 30s blackface was the stereotypical face for Blacks in cartoons and on stage. Blackface is theatrical makeup used by white people to play black people. In the United States, where the practice became popular during the 19th century, it became associated with certain archetypes of American racism such as the “happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation” or the “dandified coon “. Hence Blackface has become associated with racism, particularly in the USA, so that the term may be used in a broader sense to include similarly stereotyped performances even when they do not involve blackface makeup. This photoshoot was to not show a stereotypical blackface but to find the details of the person underneath the makeup. It was a real enjoyable shoot and a pain to get all of that black off.© James Walker [link]

Final for a friends class. Theme was dominatrix with an odd circus/animal element. I’m on the left, cleverly hidden by my black corset, gloves and stockings. I felt like I was channeling some sort of Betty Page, hehe. © James Walker
